Dug a little. Bedrock at about 20 cm—no wonder nothing would grow. We switched to wedge and hammer. Today the “garden” felt like a construction site.

Digging down to find solid bedrock just under the topsoil

Just keep breaking the ground. Maybe this will get the depth down another 20–30 cm. But once I broke through the hardpan, the soil turned out to be bluish... Probably due to poor drainage — the iron must be in a reduced state.

Broken stones and a deeper soil profile after chipping

Still breaking rock. A chisel hammer would be nice…

Continuing rock breaking work across the bed

It’s probably solid bedrock under the whole field.

Trenches showing bedrock extending under the plot

A small milestone. The rocks on the left are the ones we broke up.
